If you are reading this, you are probably one of the people who asked me if I intended to document my professional leave. Well, your wish is my command: here it is. You are my primary audience.
I decided to call this newsletter proof of life partly because I hope for it to serve as a reminder to myself that, whatever happens afterwards, I really did live on my own terms for at least a little while. The name also reminds you all that I am kicking around somewhere, even if we haven’t talked in a long time. Finally, “proof of life” avoids placing a subject-matter restriction on the content of the newsletter, since anything I create in my lifetime will surely fall within the promise of the title.
On that note, I don’t make any promises as to the quantity, frequency, or quality of the content. Updates will appear if and when it occurs to me to make them. Narrative coherence, consistency of tone, academic rigor, and journalistic integrity are not among my objectives for this project.
Instead, I’m hoping that this will be a way to feel connected with the world around me, forge a friendlier relationship with risk, and have something to look back on at the end of a long-awaited (dangerous? mysterious?) journey.
